ETYMOLOGY. Named for Krzysztof [= Christopher] Proszynski: born in Auschwitz Konzentrationslager (= Auschwitz Concentration Camp) in January 1945; died of hunger six days later, after the death of his mother, Pia Proszynska, exhausted by childbirth. Pia had been carried off by Nazi Germans to the Auschwitz Camp during the pacification of the Warsaw Uprising (August-September 1944), together with the majority of the civilian population of the Warsaw's Ochota Quarter; Krzysztof was a first cousin of the author.
