group of genera
HYLLINAE

trial version

Version May 31st, 2015

Disclaimer This is a work in progress, continually being developed and revised. Proposed new taxonomic names, included here, are not valid unless subsequently published in accepted taxonomic papers. Note on images This introduction to a classification includes only species defined by diagnostic illustrations in the taxonomic literature arranged by similarities of embolus and spermophor. Images are displayed as thumbnails to save space and allow for rapid scanning of theoretically closely-related species. Thumbnails are small versions of illustrations in other parts of the monograph, whera are displayed together with particulars of their sources and permissions.

Type genus Hyllus .
Afrobeata , Brancus , Cembalea , Cosmophasis [bitaeniatus group!] , Eburneana , Epeus , Erasinus , Hyllus , Iranattus, Marpissa , Mendoza , Mogrus , Monomotapa =Iranattus? , Nannenus , Penionomus , Philaeus , Plexippoides , Ptocasius , Telamonia , Thyene , Tusitala, Vailimia , Viciria.

Introduction

HYLLINAE are recognizable by thin embolus in male palps, encircling bulbus entirely, or in part, and by spermophor, running along contour of bulbus. Bulbus is circular or oval, flattish, with sclerotized tegument, semitransparent. The course of spermophor is comparable in part to SITTICINAE, in which, however, it makes characteristic loop in the center of bulbus. Internal structures of epigyne (see illustrations below) variable, can characterize particular genera, but not the whole subfamily.

Gen. Mendoza Peckham & Peckham, 1894

Type species Mendoza canestrini.
REMARKS: Internal structure of epigyne can be arranged into sequence of changes continuous with Marpissa. Male palp
resembles Marpissa by flattened lateral surface, ended with postero-ventral process. Body shape slim and elongate
corresponds with that in Marpissa. Consequently separation of these genera make little sense.
