Disclaimer. This is a work in progress, continually being developed and revised. Proposed new taxonomic names, included here are not valid unless subsequently published in accepted taxonomic papers. Note on images. This introduction to a classification includes only species with diagnostic illustrations in the taxonomic literature and Internet, arranged by similarities of embolus and spermophor. Images are displayed as thumbnails to save space and allow for rapid scanning of supposedly closely-related species. Thumbnails are small versions of illustrations species. Thumbnails are small versions of illustrations in other parts of the monograph, where are displayed together with particulars of their sources and permissions.

Abstract

Type genus Dendryphantes . Interactive index: Bellota Dendryphantes Macaroeris Rhene Zeuxippus

Introduction

Definition. Embolus located on membranous anterior haematodocha, anteriorly to bulbus, is short, often broadened, sometimes forked anteriorly or split into two sclerotized processes. Bulbus with hardened tegument, opaque or partially translucent, sometimes with ducts of spermophor emerging anterolaterally on prolateral side of bulbus. Epigyne characteristic, with anterior openings, often in a semi crescent groove, copulatory ducts sclerotized, run posteriorly, to spermathecae, which usually form complicated entangled coils, or sclerotized body with internal convoluted chambers. Structure and composition of the subfamily was extensively discussed by Maddison, 1996 and is followed here.

Mediterranean genus, possible also in Indian Subcontinent

Type species Macaroeris nidicolens.
REMARKS. A puzzling genus with male palp resembling Euophryinae and epigyne characteristic for Dendyphantinae. Similar mixture of characters occurs in unrelated Omoedus niger.
