Disclaimer. This is a work in progress, continually being developed and revised. Proposed new taxonomic names, included here are not valid unless subsequently published in accepted taxonomic papers. Note on images. This introduction to a classification includes only species defined by diagnostic illustrations in the taxonomic literature and Internet, arranged by similarities of embolus and spermophor. Images are displayed as thumbnails to save space and allow for rapid scanning of supposedly closely-related species. Thumbnails are small versions of illustrations in other parts of the monograph, where are displayed together with particulars of their sources and permissions.

Abstract

The guide consists of the following genera mentioned on this page and linked from here :
Type genus Aelurillus, Langona, Mashonarus, Phlegra, Phanuelus, Rafalus , Stenaelurillus.

Introduction

AELURILLINAE contains robust, terrestrial forms, running or ambushing, with cryptic but diversified color pattern, either gray with dark spots or with light streaks and spots, which break spider's silhouette hidden on the gray background of sands and stones. Spots and colors visible in frontal view are particularly diagnostic. In males tegulum is opaque, covers the whole bulbus, spermophor lateral, straight. Only tip of embolus emerges from beneath tegulum, where remaining part of embolus is hidden in a pocket between bulbus and cymbium, coiled and sitting on distal haematodocha. Tibial apophysis short, robust, sometimes sclerotized and hook like, often accompanied by fleshy protuberance more dorsally. Female epigyne often with sclerotized edges or rims, spermathecae often in a form of convoluted chambers inside compact, solid body, copulatory ducts sclerotized.
RRMARKS. Coiled embolus atop of distal haematodocha indicate relationship with Euphryinae, which were demonstrated for many species by Azarkina (various publications). Subfamily contains 247 species worldwide, documented by diagnostic drawings.
